Faux Leather vs Microfiber: Which Is Better for Your Products?

Faux leather vs microfiber leather is not strictly an either-or comparison: microfiber leather is one type of synthetic leather. Buyers usually mean conventional PU- or PVC-coated fabric versus a microfiber-based construction. The right choice depends on the exact coating, backing, finish and end use, not a material-family label alone.

What Are You Comparing?

Many conventional faux leathers use a woven or nonwoven textile backing with a polymer coating and surface finish. A microfiber construction uses a fine-fiber nonwoven substrate, often combined with polyurethane. Suppliers use these names for different grades, so obtain the construction sheet and a current sample for each item before treating two offers as equivalent.

For footwear, compare the material in the intended shoe part: upper, overlay, lining or trim. A material that looks suitable as a flat swatch can behave differently after cutting, lasting, stitching and repeated flexing in a finished shoe. Bag and upholstery buyers should test their own seam, abrasion and cleaning conditions as well.

PU-Coated Fabric and Microfiber: Buyer Comparison

Decision factor PU- or PVC-coated fabric Microfiber-based synthetic leather What to verify
Structure Coating and textile backing vary by grade. Fine-fiber nonwoven backing and coating or impregnation vary by grade. Current construction sheet, cross-section and backing sample.
Hand feel and drape Can be soft or structured depending on formulation and backing. Can be soft or structured depending on fiber, finish and thickness. Physical swatches and a finished prototype.
Flexing and abrasion No universal result follows from the PU or PVC label. No universal result follows from the microfiber label. Same test method, conditioning, specimen and acceptance threshold.
Moisture and care Coating, perforation and backing affect behavior. Coating, porosity and backing affect behavior. Application-specific water, moisture and cleaning tests.
Cost and supply Quoted by exact grade, usable width, finish and volume. Quoted by exact grade, usable width, finish and volume. Current quotation, MOQ, lead time and yield after cutting.

Which Material Is Better for Shoe Uppers?

Neither family is always better. For a shoe upper, state the pattern, target thickness and tolerance, stiffness, grain, color, backing and processing method. Pay particular attention to high-flex areas such as the vamp. Request flex performance under an agreed temperature and test method, plus abrasion and colorfastness evidence where relevant. Review the prototype after lasting and stitching.

For linings or other skin-contact parts, add the applicable chemical requirements and color transfer checks. For outdoor footwear, test the finished construction, seams and adhesives; a water-resistant swatch does not prove a waterproof shoe. See our shoe faux-leather selection guide for a shoe-part checklist.

How Should Durability Claims Be Tested?

Cycle counts, years of service and percentage improvements are meaningful only when the compared grades, test method, conditioning and pass threshold are disclosed. A single laboratory result should not be generalized to every PU or microfiber product. Ask suppliers for current grade-specific reports and inspect failure mode as well as a headline number. Confirm how repeated folding, abrasion, hydrolysis and colorfastness relate to the actual product and market.

What Determines Price and Lead Time?

Coating chemistry, backing, finish, width, order size, color matching and current availability affect price. Comparing price per meter alone may miss usable width, cutting yield and rejected material. Request like-for-like quotes and sample terms for the exact constructions. MOQ and delivery dates must be reconfirmed when the material and color are selected.

Sample Request Checklist

  • Name the end product and part, with a sketch or reference sample.
  • Specify target thickness, backing, grain, color and required hand feel.
  • Describe cutting, skiving, sewing, lasting, bonding and cleaning processes.
  • List test methods, conditioning and pass criteria for the intended market.
  • Request a current swatch, grade-specific documentation, MOQ and quotation.

Start with the PU leather range or our microfiber material guide. Then send the application details so the team can review suitable samples. Material availability and performance require confirmation for the selected grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is microfiber leather a type of faux leather?

Yes. It is a synthetic-leather construction with a microfiber-based substrate. The term does not by itself define a coating, thickness or test result.

Is microfiber always more durable than PU leather?

No. Compare specific grades with the same test method and conditions. Construction, coating and finish can change the outcome.

Which is more breathable?

Neither material family has one fixed breathability value. Request measured results for the exact coated and backed construction, and consider the finished product design.

Can I use a material test report as proof for my finished shoe?

Not by itself. A material report covers its stated sample and conditions; the finished shoe may need separate testing for the intended claim or market.
